Those Amber Eyes
If only you could feel my pain; You wouldn’t ask of me, The things I am incapable of... In this capacity.
Those amber eyes, so large, Have looked at me for days; As if to say, please help! I’ve reached the end of my days.
They plead with you to end it all, But they also know you are weak. You put off the inevitable The days ahead look bleak.
For without you here beside us, Is too big a choice to bear. An empty void now fills our hearts, A space where you once were.
The hall door now opens, Without greeting or sound The fireside is empty Bereft of you’re big white mound.
The trip to the vet was pure hell! No pain could run so deep. My mission unwanted!!!!! To have you put to sleep.
Parting with you after twelve years, Is hell and hell alone, No one knows such devastation Unless they have lost such a friend.
You could not help getting sick, You battled on through life, You had the biggest heart of all You were our shining light.
Now we miss you everywhere we look No eyes to shine upon us now, No brown nose to rest on your foot, No white fur to stroke!
I am so sorry Matty, I know that it was me! That let you go to spirit world Where dogs and wolves run free.
That spirit came and took you At the very end! Now you roam with Withey and Moss, Leaving your eternal friends
But we are always here for you, We will meet again some day Until that time comes! Be a good dog for your Mam.

My beautiful handsome boy Until we meet for the last time Remember you'll always be mine I look down and see your face
Full of wisdom and grace You tilt your head and look to me You're still here but your spirit runs free One day I shall come and call for you
My best friend so loyal and true You won't cross the bridge alone For in my arms you'll be back home So carry me with you everyday

A Little Dog's Prayer
A master who is firm and kind, And understands a doggie mind, A walkie and a meal each day, That's all I ask for when I pray.
Thanks to Gail for this poem.
Dog.
When God made the earth and sky, The flowers and the trees He then made all the animals, The fish, the birds, and bees. And when at last He'd finished Not one was quite the same. He said, "I'll walk this world of mine, And give each one a name." And so he traveled far and wide And everywhere he went A little creature followed him Until its strength was spent. When all were named upon the earth And in the sky and sea, The little creature said, "Dear Lord,There's not one left for me." Kindly the Father said to him,"I've left you to the end I've turned my name back to front And called you dog, my friend."

Lend Me a Pup
I will lend to you for awhile, a German Shepherd pup, God said, For you to love him while he lives and mourn for him when he's dead. Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three But will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me.
He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return But there are lessons taught below I want this pup to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true And from the folk that crowd's life's land I have chosen you. Now will you give him all your love Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come to take my Shepherd back again.
I fancied that I heard them say "Dear Lord Thy Will be Done," For all the joys this Shepherd will bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness we'll love him while we may And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay.
But should you call him back much sooner than we've planned, We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand. If, by our love, we've managed, your wishes to achieve In memory of him we loved, to help us while we grieve, When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife, We'll have yet another German Shepherd and love him all his life.

A Poem on Parting
Don't grieve too long for now I'm free I'm following the path God set for me I ran to Him when I heard His call I wagged my tail and left it all.
I could not stay another day To bark, to love, to romp or play Games left unplayed must stay that way I found such peace it made my day.
My parting has left you with a void So fill it with your remembered joy A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss Oh yes, these things I too shall miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow My life's been full, you've given so much Your time, your love and gentle touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don't lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your heart and share with me God wanted me now, He set me free.

Do I Go Home Today?
My family brought me home cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me and said I was full of charm. They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys. I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys.
The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them - all snuggled in the sheets. I used to go for walks, often several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.
These are the things I'll not forget - a cherished memory. I now live in the shelter-without my family. They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe. But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.
The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug. So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug. They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside. This I did not understand, although I tried and tried.
The walks stopped, one by one; they said they had no time. I wish that I could change things, I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely, in the backyard, on a chain. I barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane.
So they brought me to the shelter, but were embarassed to say why, They said I caused an allergy, and then they each kissed me goodbye. If I'd only had some classes, as a little pup. I wouldn't have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up. "You only have one day left." I heard the worker say. Does that mean I have a second chance? Do I go Home today?

A Dog's Plea
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for the kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger. And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

I Stood By Your Bed
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that your were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly As you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times, Your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at the grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to re-assure you, That I am not laying there.
I walked with you towards the house, As you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."
You looked so very tired, And sank into your chair, I tried so hard to let you know, That I was standing there.
It's possible for me, To be so near you every day. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, Then smiled, I think you knew... In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning, And say, "Good-night, God Bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you, To cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you, And we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, There is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out.. Then come home to be with me.

The Spirit of a German Shepherd Dog
I was standing on a hillside In a field of blowing wheat And the spirit of a German Shepherd Was lying at my feet. He looked at me with kind dark eyes An ancient wisdom shining through And in the essence of his being I saw love there too.
His mind did lock upon my heart As I stood there on that day And he told me of this story About a place so far away.
I stood upon that hillside In a field of blowing wheat And in a twinkling of a second His spirit left my feet.
His tale did put my heart at ease My fears did fade away About what lay ahead of me On another distant day.
"I live among God's creatures now In the heavens of your mind So do not grieve for me, my friend As I am with my kind.
My collar is a rainbow's hue My leash a shooting star My boundaries are the Milky Way Where I sparkle from afar.
There are no pens or kennels here For I am not confined But free to roam God's heavens Among my Shepherd kind.
I nap the day on a snowy cloud Gentle breezes rocking me And dream the dreams of earthlings And how it used to be.
The trees are full of liver treats And tennis balls abound And Milkbones line the walkways Just waiting to be found.
There even is a ring set up The grass all lush and green And everyone who gaits around Becomes the Best of Breed.
For we're all winners in this place We have no faults, you see And God passes out those ribbons To each one, even me.
I drink from waters laced with gold My world a beauty to behold And wise old dogs do form my pride To amble at my very side.
At night I sleep in an angel's arms Her wings protecting me And moonbeams dance about us As stardust falls on thee.
So when your life on earth is spent And you stand at Heaven's gate Have no fear of loneliness For here, you know I wait."

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then will you do what must be done, For this -- the last battle -- can't be won. You will be sad I understand, But don't let grief then stay your hand, For on this day, more than the rest, Your love and friendship must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, You wouldn't want me to suffer so. When the time comes, please, let me go. Take me to where to my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I have been saved. Don't grieve that it must be you Who has to decide this thing to do; We've been so close -- we two -- these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears.

The Retired Show Dog
He sits to the side, out of the way while others beg head rubs, or force you to play. His dark liquid eyes watch your every move hoping and waiting, his love to prove. He was shown many times, a promising pup And he just got better as he grew up. A picture of health, robust and strong, his gait and topline, never went wrong. But his prime has passed, and he seems to know, that he'll never again be put in a show. He eats, he sleeps, not much more than that, and maybe he's getting a little too fat. He loves to be brushed, when you have the time, He waits for his turn at the end of the line. You think of him, sure, but not nearly as much As those promising pups, that new special and such. So he sits and he waits, til you have the time, To make the same fuss as you did in his prime. A scrap of affection, or playful shove, to him it means everything, to him it means LOVE!

The Broken Chain
If tears could build a stairway, And memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven, And bring you home again.
Little did we know that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, - in death we do the same... It broke our hearts to loose you, - you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us precious memories, - your love is still our guide, And although we can not see you, - you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us home - One by one, the chain will link again
